SiteGround Review (In-Depth): The Best Web Hosting Company?

What you can expect from this SiteGround review:

With my personal experience and intensive research, I hope this review can help you to decide whether they are the ones for you.

Why I Switched to SiteGround from Hostgator

SiteGround wasn’t my first hosting company, neither is Hostgator, but I’m previously from Hostgator cloud hosting (Business plan).

hostgator cloud hosting image

The main reason is I wasn’t satisfied with the server loading speed, they are ok but not fast enough to my expectation, which motivated me to find a faster web shared hosting.

Hostgator cloud hosting (Business plan) claimed to be 2X Faster and 4X More Scalable, but the thing is, I don’t feel it, and my speed test results don’t justify it.

Next is the customer support, I found that it takes a rather long time to get connected with customer support via live chat, and even slower for support ticket replies.

Another annoying thing is that they keep emailing me about my site being vulnerable to hackers (eg: email me with the subject “your site was hacked”), asking me to buy their security add-on services, site scanner, etc.

Hey, I hosted my websites on your server and you are telling me that my websites are insecure and vulnerable to viruses, are you asking me to leave?

So why did I switch to SiteGround (GrowBig shared hosting) from Hostgator (Business cloud hosting)?

Because Hostgator cloud hosting is not fast enough, and SiteGround is known to have a very fast server load speed (based on a lot of good user reviews)

Because Hostgator customer support is slow, and SiteGround has a fast response support team (based on many good user reviews and I tested it via live chat)

Because Hostgator is telling me my websites are vulnerable to hackers, and SiteGround is telling me that my site is safe with their secured hosting environment.

So here I am, on SiteGround shared hosting (GrowBig).

Don’t get me wrong, Hostgator is still ok in terms of speed and feature, it just didn’t impress me to the level that I want to recommend them to my audience, that’s all.

But it’s a completely different story for SiteGround, once I switched to them, made a tour to the back office, tested out their features and functionalities, I was motivated to recommend them to all my friends and beloved audience.

And now I’m going to share my personal experience with this new shared hosting service.

SiteGround Hosting Load Time Test (Real Data)

To get the actual speed performance data, I’ve conducted three tests on my site ‘OverThin.com’ using the three popular page speed testing tools which are GTmetrix, Pingdom, and WebPageTest.

Here are the results I got (without any caching and optimization, just pure server speed with one of the fastest WordPress themes.):

What Do I Like About SiteGround? (My Thoughts)

Is SiteGround good?

Well, here are my thoughts and experiences about them.

To me, the best web hosting should have the following advantages:

  • Fast server loading time – Very important for any webmasters and bloggers!
  • Highly secured – Crucial for your website (or brand) safety and trustworthiness!
  • Great customer support – Because Fast, accountable, and knowledgeable customer services make a big difference in user experience!
  • Useful features – Useful features like free SSL certificate and caching can improve the overall website performance
  • Easy to use – The majority of bloggers and webmasters are not tech-savvy, so the platform has to be user-friendly to make people’s life easier

Out of these five, the first three are the most important factors in deciding the best web hosting company.

And you should always prioritize a trustworthy hosting company with high-performance hosting servers, top security, and superior customer support.

Why?

Imagine this, one day you wake up and find out that your website is down or hacked or full of technical glitches, which directly affect your income, but the worst is you can’t reach out to their support team, in that case, you are screwed!

In the end, your website ranking was dropped and the money you lost is more than the money you saved from getting cheap hosting service.

Another thing I like about SiteGround is that they didn’t involve themselves in the cheap price war like many other hosting companies, instead they focus on core hosting performance and features, which are the more important factors than price.

Talking about the price, SiteGround is not far from those cheap hosting providers, but in terms of value (hosting performance to a dollar), SiteGround is way above them, and you can make the value even higher with this 70% discount link.

If you are serious about building up an online business that generates income for you, whether it’s a blog, an online store selling products, or business website that provide services, you have to choose a hosting company that you can rely on.

Who is SiteGround

Here are some backgrounds about SiteGround:

Main Advantages of SiteGround Hosting

They have plenty of great and powerful features, but these four are the main features that make them stand up from the competition.

1. Ultra-fast Server Speed

The website’s loading speed is highly dependent on the hosting server speed.

Slow website speed equals bad user experience because most internet users are impatient and won’t wait more than 5 seconds for the website to load.

If your website is slow, the bounce rate will rise, and your website ranking on search engines like Google will drop to nowhere, which directly affects your website traffic and revenue.

SiteGround knows how important the website speed is to all the webmasters and bloggers, so they take website loading speed seriously by keeping their hosting services updated with the latest innovative technologies.

Here are some of the technologies:

  • Powered by Google cloud ultra-fast network with SSD-persistent storage
  • Use SSD (Solid State Drives) which is 15 times faster & 4-10 times more reliable than HDD
  • NGINX Direct Delivery for all sites to speed up loading of static contents like images
  • NGINX dynamic and Memcached caching for GrowBig and GoGeek
  • Free CDN (Content Delivery Network) for all sites
  • HTTP/2 and PHP7
  • Additional PHP optimization through OPCache extension

All the above innovative technologies make them one of the fastest web hostings in the market, and your websites hosted on their server will load real fast!

My websites load a lot faster right after I switched to SiteGround, look at the screenshot below for one of my website load time result (that’s 145.7% speed increment!).

siteground reivew: before and after image

If you are targeting worldwide users, their platform comes with free Cloudflare CDN integration to let you set up your content delivery network in just a few clicks.

2. Top-notch Security Protection

In this digital era, more and more cybercrime, security breach, DDOS attack, brute-force attack, malware infections, and hacking happen around the internet world.

What matters is, your website is vulnerable to all these and could be one of the victims without a secured hosting.

So, a high-security level is vital for all the webmasters and bloggers.

The good news is, this is what SiteGround is strong and serious at, as they put security first by proactively protecting your website from hack attacks and malicious code that can affect your credibility and site ranking.

They manage the security of your websites at the server and application level to ensure a highly secured environment.

Here are some of their security features that make your site secured:

  • Custom WAF (Web Application Firewall) – Protect your site by constantly adding new custom security rules
  • Real-time server health checks – The server status is checked every 0.5 sec to detect ongoing issues and fix them automatically
  • AI Anti-Bot System – Effectively blocks millions of security threats every day.
  • Free SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate – Encrypt and Protect the data in transit

Other than the above security features, they also provide security tools like:

  • HTTPS Enforce – To enforce your website to work over an encrypted HTTPS connection
  • Protected URLs – To limit access to specific URLs on your website with password
  • Blocked IPs – Block the suspicious IPs to prevent bandwidth draining and hack attack
  • SG SiteScanner – Add-on website daily scanning service with immediate alert feature at $1.65/month

If that’s not enough, they run daily backups automatically to ensure you can always restore your sites in case anything happens.

Also, all your websites are scanned regularly for viruses and malware and monitored by their team all the time to give you peace of mind.

3. Top-notch Customer Support

It’s common that you may face some problems with the hosting service and need quick assistance from customer support.

I have contacted their customer support a few times via live chat, and you know what? Every time I end the live chat session with good impressions, and of course, the problems are solved, so I can’t help but give the full marks satisfaction feedback.

Their customer service is second to none!

Sometimes, it’s what happens when things go wrong that matters the most.

SiteGround is a company that prides itself on superior client support and customer satisfaction.

So customer service is always one of their priorities, which contributes to a major portion of their positive reviews and customers’ loyalty.

Their average support response time is far faster than the competitors, which makes them the best customer-support hosting company in the market.

Here are the three channels of their support:

  • Live chat – Available 24/7 with immediate response
  • Phone support – Quick support over the phone
  • Helpdesk ticket – Submit a ticket and get a reply in a few minutes, fastest in the hosting industry

Timely support and response are what matters in this fast-paced era.

With SiteGround, no more waiting for hours or days to get help for your websites.

Here’re my impressions to SiteGround’s customer support:

  • Prompt support
  • Friendly customer services
  • Knowledgeable
  • Accountable

Remember, you are the customer who paid for the services, so you deserve great customer service and shouldn’t compromise it with a cheaper price, and SiteGround (link*) is the company that is worth your money.

4. Easy Website Management & Managed WordPress

If you are not good at technology, this platform is a big advantage for you.

The new user-friendly interface allows you to manage and configure your domains and websites easily as most of the tools and settings are inside one place (Site Tools).

Besides, the unique staging feature allows you to test your website’s design and coding on a separate staging environment before going live, which is a fantastic feature for beginners and web developers.

Also, all the plans include managed WordPress hosting.

SiteGround Pros and Cons

Their hosting services are impressive, but nothing is perfect in the real world businesses, so let’s discuss the pros and cons of their web hosting services from both technical and practical aspects.

The Pros – What’s Good About SiteGround

Let’s start with the pros:

  • Fast Server Response Time
  • Fast Website Load Time
  • Uptime Guarantee
  • Selectable Multiple Data Centers
  • Free Automated Daily Backups
  • Transparency
  • Domain Registration
  • Global-Centric
  • High Security
  • Top-notch Customer Service
  • Free Website Migration
  • Cloudflare CDN integration

1. Fast Server Response Time (Technical)

SiteGround has a very fast server response time, which means their servers can deliver your website contents to the internet users’ browsers in a short time (less than 200 milliseconds).

So when there’s a request from an internet user’s browser, the SiteGround server responds almost instantly to cut off the waiting time.

2. Fast Website Load Time (Practical)

I already discussed the SiteGround innovate speed technologies that enable fast loading speed of websites hosted on their high-performance servers.

Practically, fast website loading speed means your internet audience will be able to see your content once they arrive at your webpages (or just wait a second or two), which is great for user experience!

3. Uptime Guarantee (Practical)

Server uptime percentage is crucial for all the webmasters as nobody wishes to see their website is down, especially for high-traffic websites.

However, it’s not possible to ensure 100% server uptime, so you should aim for at least 99.9% server uptime, which is what SiteGround is guaranteed.

SiteGround review: uptime guarantee

So practically, you don’t have to worry about your website being unavailable to the internet users.

4. Selectable Multiple Data Centers (Technical)

When you are signing up, SiteGroud gives you a list of data centers to choose from according to your target audience.

The data center locations are the USA (Chicago & Council Bluffs), UK (London), Europe (Eemshaven & Amsterdam), and Singapore.

That’s one of the reasons for their extremely fast server response time due to shorter physical distance between your audience and the server location.

5. Free Automated Daily Backups (Practical)

Imagine this, you have spent 2 years building up a beautifully-made website from scratch with 100 articles on it, but one day your website crashed suddenly, and the worst thing is, that’s no backup and you have to start over again from scratch, how painful can it be?

In short, data is extremely important in this digital era, everything is data, and you should always back up your data from time to time to prepare for unfortunate incidents.

For SiteGround users, they are offering free automated daily backups to protect your data, so if anything happens, you can always restore your data.

It’s just like the insurance for websites.

Of course, as a webmaster (or blogger) of your beloved website, I’d advise you to perform your responsibility in backing up your website’s data from time to time also, for the good.

Here’s the interface of SiteGround’s backup tool:

siteground reivew: backup tool image

As you can see, they did backup my site every day, and in case I accidentally screwed up my website while testing out different speed optimization methods, I can restore my website with the following options:

  • All files and databases
  • Files
  • Databases
  • Emails

Which gives me a green light to go ahead and screw up (test out) my site.

Here are benefits with their 1-click backup tool:

  • View and manage backups easily
  • Create a new backup in one click
  • Restore backup quickly
  • Prevent data lost due to self-made mistakes and outside attack
  • Testing the website’s new features and functionalities
  • Undo website’s modifications

6. Transparency (Practical)

Believe it or not, transparency drives loyalties.

Most people like to buy from companies that are transparent to you about what they do and how they do it, especially for important services like hosting.

For SiteGround, they are transparent about what is included in each plan and how much traffic it can handle, so you can choose the plan according to your need and know exactly what features you are paying for.

They are also transparent about their technical specification like how exactly their platform is built and the details of each technology they are using.

7. Domain Registration (Practical)

To build a website, you need both hosting and domain.

So to ease your work, SiteGround is providing domain registration service as well, so you can register the domain and the hosting in just a few clicks, all under one place.

Besides, they also offer country-specific domain names to local individuals and companies.

Another advantage when you register a domain with them is that you don’t have to point your domain DNS from other domain registrars to SiteGround server, which saves you some hassle if you are not tech-savvy.

8. Global-Centric (Practical)

SiteGround’s focus is global and not just their own country, which is great for users all around the world.

For instance, their website has 8 different versions including some translated versions, which are World, United Kingdom, Spain, United States, Europe, Italy, LATAM, and Australia.

They also accept payment in a few country currencies like USD, AUD, EUR, and more.

No matter which country you are from, SiteGround is taking care of you.

9. High Security (Practical)

One of the main advantages of choosing SiteGround is its high-security protection.

A website is your online asset, it’s so valuable that it needs to be protected by a highly secured hosting company to give you peace of mind.

They have some of the best security tools and features to take care of your websites.

Security is not just important for you but also for your users, especially if you are running an e-commerce or online store which collects customers’ private information.

10. Top-notch Customer Service (Practical)

Most of the users will need help from customer support when it comes to technical-related services like hosting.

So it’s important to buy from a hosting company with excellent customer service, and as I said earlier, SiteGround is a company that prides itself on its customer support service, which is what you should be looking for.

Based on their support records, their customer support team picks up the phone immediately, solves the customers’ issues on Live Chat in 5 minutes, replies to first tickets in 8 minutes!

Also, their customer support team that’s helpful, patient, friendly, accountable, and knowledgeable can be reached 24/7 to solve your problems.

11. Free Website Migration (Practical)

Again, for customers that are not good at technical, website migration is tedious work for them when switching a  hosting company.

Thankfully, SiteGround is providing free website transfer service for one website (regardless of size and CMS), so you can sit back and relax while waiting for your website to be transferred over by their technical experts.

I got my website transferred to the SiteGround server in less than 24 hours.

If you have more than one website to transfer, they also provide you a simple to use SiteGround migrator plugin with a step-by-step guide to making your manual migration work much easier.

12. Cloudflare CDN integration (Technical)

If you are serving content to worldwide users, you may want to use Cloudflare, which is a CDN (Content Delivery Network) that comes with a free plan.

The content delivery network consists of multiple data centers around the world.

For instance, the Cloudflare CDN network spans 200 cities in more than 90 countries, which cache your website content and distribute it to users from the nearest data centers to speed up content delivery.

Additionally, Cloudflare protects your website by analyzing your website traffic and automatically blocking malicious and unwanted traffic.

The Cons – What’s Not So Good About SiteGround

As I said earlier, nothing is perfect in the real world businesses, so this web hosting company does have some shortfall in their hosting services.

If these Cons matter to you, then you may have to think twice whether they are the right hosting for you.

1. Strict Policy on Data Over-Usage (Technical)

For SG hosting, there’s a limit on how much server resources (measured in CPU Seconds and Program Executions) your websites can use every month.

If your account exceeded the usage limit regularly, they may put your websites on hold.

A few spikes on high resource consumption is fine, but not constantly exceeding the allocated resource quota.

But on the flip side, it’s a good news for you if you are on their shared hosting and not running any resources hunger application, because that means your websites are protected from other users who may exhaust the shared server resources for prolonged periods.

While the over-usage policy is for the benefit of all users on the shared hosting, it still, somehow limits your web applications’ functions such as aggressive complex calculation, real-time scanning and monitoring, and more advanced operations.

For instance, you can’t run resources hunger plugins and web tools on your websites, and if you want to, you have to choose their higher-tier plans that come with more resources allowance or go for other hosting companies.

They display the resource usage statistics inside your SG account to ensure you are clear about how much resources each of your websites is using.

They also inform you upfront the estimated web traffic each plan can handle:

  • StartUp – About 10,000 visits per month
  • GrowBig – About 25,000 visits per month
  • GoGeek – About 100,000 visits per month

Nevertheless, the monthly website traffic is just a relative number, the resource consumption still depends on other factors like website optimizations, caching, and operation.

Frankly, if you are running a high-traffic website (more than 100,000 visits monthly), it’s better to go for their cloud hosting package which comes with a lot more resources.

2.  Limited Data Storage (Practical)

One of the drawbacks is the limited amount of data you can store on their server, which limits your web project and application usage.

For SiteGround shared hosting plans, the StartUp comes with only 10GB of data storage, GrowBig has 20GB, and GoGeek comes with 30GB.

Of course, it’s enough for most people to build a few functional websites with text, images, plugins, some videos, and medium-scale web tools.

To give you an idea, one of my website with 15 long-form articles (plenty of text and images), 6 basic pages (about, contact, privacy policy, etc.), 20 total plugins, and 1 simple web tool (calculator) used 605MB (or 0.605GB) of data storage.

I think that the limitation is for the good for all the other users on the shared hosting server, because if one user took up too much data storage, it may affect other users’ websites loading time due to slow server response time.

But if your web project requires a large amount of data storage, like an HD video storing site, large-scale web application tool, huge e-commerce site, and high-resolution image storing site, then I’m afraid SiteGround is not the best web hosting for you.

3. Price is Not the Cheapest (Practical)

Yes, their price is never the cheapest in the market, like I said earlier, their focus is not on price war, but performances and features that are truly important to webmasters and bloggers.

SiteGround offers high-performance hosting with powerful features, and great service comes with a higher cost, and that’s the reason why they can’t give the cheapest price, but an affordable price with the best value.

So if you are solely looking for the cheapest price hosting and don’t care about website speed performance, security and customer support, then don’t consider SiteGround.

Because you can surely find a cheaper shared hosting plan in the market.

But, you get what you pay for. Pay a lower price for lower server speed, moderate security, and slow customer support.

So my advice is, don’t blindly chase for the lowest price but the best value at a reasonable price.

If you are looking for the best value hosting services, which come with a high-speed server, high security, and top-notch customer support, look no further than SiteGround.

If talking about value, SiteGround shared hosting is the top in the market based on my research, personal experience, and public user reviews.

You get more than what you pay for, that’s what I called a real ‘value buy’!

To summarize the pros and cons, while there are three drawbacks to this shared hosting, however, the pros far outweigh the cons, so if you are not running resource-heavy web applications, SiteGroundwill is the best web hosting for you, period.

Here’s a quick overview of the three shared hosting plans:

Shared Hosting Plans Comparison

Here are comparisons of StartUp vs GrowBig vs GoGeek.

If you are not sure about which is the shared web hosting plan is the best for you, the following comparison guidelines will help you decide.

StartUp vs GrowBig (Comparison)

Let’s start with the StartUp and GrowBig first.

First question, how many websites do you currently have?

  • If more than one – GrowBig
  • If the answer is one or no, go to the next question

Second question, will you launch a new website in the next year? Let’s say for a different project or you just want to get a new domain name and would like to keep the old domain name.

  • If yes – GrowBig
  • If no, go to the next question

Third question, how much website traffic are you expecting for the next 12 months?

  • More than 10,000/mo. – GrowBig
  • Less than 10,000/mo. – StartUp

Note: Both plans are not meant for resources-intensive web projects.

The main concern for the StartUp plan is that it can only host 1 website, followed by the low server resources, making it only suitable for entry-level beginners with one small to medium website.

While for GrowBig, it can cover a much wider range of web projects with a higher amount of server resources and most importantly, can host unlimited websites.

Besides, the GrowBig plan gives you access to all 3 levels of SuperCacher, allowing you to speed up your website with its static, dynamic and Memcached caching technologies, while the StartUp plan has static caching only.

If you only have one website and no intention to create another one within the next 1 to 2 years, you can sign up SiteGround’s Startup plan at just $3.95/mo with this link, that’s about 67% saving per month from its original price at $11.95/mo.

For more than one website, go for the GrowBig plan at just $5.95/mo with this link, that’s about 70% saving per month from its original price at $19.95/mo.

GrowBig vs GoGeek (Comparison)

Next, let’s talk about GrowBig and GoGeek plans.

Fourth question, do you run 2 and more high-traffic websites, or medium-sized e-commerce stores, or resource-heavy web tools?

  • Yes – GoGeek
  • No – GrowBig

For most people, the main difference between these 2 plans is the additional server resources, followed by a few more premium features like pre-installed Grit, white-label clients, and advanced priority support.

GoGeek is just like an upgraded version of GrowBig with fewer users sharing the same server’s resources, you can sign up at $11.95 with this link, that’s 65.8% saving per month from its original price at $34.95/mo.

Which Shared Hosting Plan is the Best for You?

By now you should know all the features from all three plans, so you are in a better position in choosing the best shared hosting plan for yourself.

Three of the hosting packages are reasonably priced for their features, so you are getting the best value even though the price is not the cheapest, and with the discount links, it’s even more valuable!

Choose StartUp if:

  • You only need to host one website
  • You only need minimal server resources for your website
  • You are okay with static caching only from SuperCacher
  • You only use less than 10GB of SSD storage
  • You are expecting less than 10,000 visits monthly for the next 12 months

Choose GrowBig if:

  • You want to host more than one website
  • You need more server resources for your websites
  • You want faster website loading speed with dynamic and Memcached caching technologies
  • You want 20 GB of SSD storage
  • You are expecting not more than 25,000 visits monthly
  • You need the staging feature to test your website before going live
  • You want to create an on-demand backup

Choose GoGeek if:

  • You want to host more than one website
  • You need a high amount of server resources for your websites
  • You want faster website loading speed with dynamic and Memcached caching technologies
  • You want 30 GB of SSD storage
  • You are expecting about 100,000 visits monthly
  • You need the staging feature to test your website before going live
  • You want to create an on-demand backup
  • You want advanced priority support
  • You need white-label hosting & client management features
  • You need the pre-installed Git to create repositories

In short:

Sign up StartUp if you intend to run one simple website

Sign up GrowBig if you intend to run multiple websites.

Sign up GoGeek if you intend to run an e-commerce or resource-heavy website.

Note: I advise going for the 3 years tenure to maximize the discount value, and you can always upgrade to the higher tier plan later.
